Le Falling Walls Science Summit 2025 se tiendra du 6 au 9 novembre à Berlin et en ligne, réunissant des leaders scientifiques pour discuter des prochaines avancées scientifiques et des impacts sur la société.

As global upheavals, strong competitors and fragile supply chains increase pressure on Europe, the summit explores how the continent can drive innovation and growth by addressing today’s key challenges: transformation, cooperation, and security.

Over the past decade, science diplomacy has evolved from a tool for fostering collaboration to a practice shaped by global fragmentation and strategic competition. This session explores how European-led science diplomacy can balance academic freedom, multilateralism and circulation of knowledge with protection and sovereignty, strengthening an international excellence-based cooperation and positioning the EU as a credible global voice.

Universities worldwide play a pivotal role in advancing knowledge, fostering innovation and connecting societies across borders. Senior representatives explore how international collaboration in research, student exchange and innovation can thrive in times of conflict, climate change and digitalisation, highlighting practical strategies to deepen academic partnerships, launch joint programmes and strengthen mobility, in doing so showcasing higher education as a driver of resilience and shared progress.

Academic research plays a pivotal role in innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems. This session explores how collaboration between universities and industry advances knowledge and drives impact. Speakers share best practices and reflect on the challenges that academics, entrepreneurs and policymakers need to address to strengthen the contribution of research to society.

As the energy transition accelerates, green energy carriers are central to a just and inclusive future. This Plenary Table brings together voices from academia, industry, and government to explore how Africa and Europe can co-develop sustainable green fuel pathways. Focusing on innovations like green hydrogen corridors and supporting policy frameworks, the session will highlight how to foster co-innovation and build resilient, equitable energy systems through African-European collaboration.

Breakthrough Day speaker Anastasia Khvorova explores the societal and ethical considerations of her research. She is developing groundbreaking RNA-based drugs that precisely regulate gene expression, a major step forward in the treatment of disease. Erica Kimmerling, with expertise in community-driven health policy and public attitudes toward science, will join the discussion. During the conversation, audience members have the opportunity to address their own aspirations and concerns related to these medical advances.

Breakthrough Day speaker John Sutherland explores the societal and ethical considerations of his research—now and in the future. His work includes revolutionising the study of life’s origin, replicating early conditions of earth and successfully creating RNA. Alicia Johnson, a biochemist working in public engagement in synthetic biology, will join this engaging, moderated talk that invites audience members to address aspirations and concerns around the implications of this scientific discovery.

We invite you to an open stage dialogue where Breakthrough Day speaker Stephen Quake will explore the role of AI in advancing the Human Cell Atlas, including automating cell type annotation in RNA sequencing. Christine Custis will join the discussion with her expertise in ethical AI innovation, sharing insights on the responsible use of AI across industries.
